The Ultimate GLP-1 Diet Guide: 6 Daily Essentials + 6 Supplements to Protect Muscle, Hair & Energy

GLP-1 weight loss blog graphic with healthy foods, supplements, and hydration items surrounding bold title text.

What everyone on GLP medications should be including in their daily diet and supplementing with daily. (6 dietary requirements and 6 supplement recommendations)

  1. Protein- duh! If you are in a caloric deficit and not hitting your protein goals (0.8g–1.2g per kg of body weight), medication may have limited success, you lose muscle mass and hair thins significantly, and you will have little to no energy.

  2. Water. Water is required for the metabolic process of lipolysis (breaking down fat). GLP-1s can dull your thirst cues, leading to "accidental" dehydration.

  3. Soluble Fiber. GLP-1s slow down gastric emptying, which can lead to constipation. Soluble fiber, like chia seeds, oats, or psyllium husk, keeps things moving gently through the digestive tract and supports the gut microbiome.

  4. Cruciferous Vegetables, like Broccoli, cauliflower, or arugula, contain sulforaphane, which aids liver detoxification during active weight loss. Hormone metabolism happens in the liver, and weight loss releases stored toxins from fat cells.

  5. Healthy Fats, 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil or half an avocado, Supports hormone production and brain health without overloading the slow-moving stomach. You need fat to absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K, but too much fat on a GLP-1 can cause extreme nausea.

  6. Fermented Foods, small serving of Greek yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut provide probiotics to ensure your digestive system remains "efficient" despite the slower transit time. A slower gut can sometimes lead to an imbalance in bacteria.

  1. creatine monohydrate (approx. 3–5g)

famous for building muscles, creatine is a "brain battery." It helps the brain maintain energy and has been shown in studies to improve mood, working memory, and symptoms of depression.

  1. Nitric Oxide- Eat nitrate-rich foods (beets, leafy greens). This dilates blood vessels to help lower blood pressure and boost brain function.

  2. Electrolytes (Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium) Rapid weight loss and changes in insulin levels cause the kidneys to excrete water and salt more quickly.mineral-rich foods like avocado and sea salt prevents the "GLP-1 headache," dizziness, and muscle cramps.

  3. Trace Minerals (Zinc & Biotin), Pumpkin seeds or a high-quality trace mineral supplement, are the building blocks for hair and nail strength that often get depleted during rapid weight loss. These will combat the hair shedding (Telogen Effluvium)

  4. Green tea with high-flavanol- (Matcha) after a high fat food completely stops the drop in vascular function, which protects oxygen flow to the brain protecting your brain’s circulation. I recommended Matcha over standard bagged tea, Because you are consuming the entire ground leaf, you get significantly more L-theanine (which prevents the caffeine "jitters") and EGCG (the primary antioxidant for brain protection). Look for "Ceremonial Grade" Matcha from Japan, as it has the highest concentration of L-theanine and lower levels of lead compared to culinary-grade tea.

  5. High-quality cocoa- increases the production of Nitric Oxide (tying back to the circulation "fix"). 50g of high-quality dark chocolate (at least 70–85% cocoa) daily. You want to get cocoa that is specifically "undutched" and rigorously tested for heavy metals and high flavonol content.

My sample of eating and a supplement schedule designed to maximize the efficacy of GLP-1 medication while protecting your muscle mass, hair, and brain health.

Upon Waking: Creatine monohydrate (3–5g) mixed in 8–12oz of water to act as a "brain battery" and support mood and energy.

With Breakfast: * Trace Minerals (Zinc & Biotin): Essential building blocks to combat potential hair shedding (Telogen Effluvium).Electrolytes (Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium): To prevent "GLP-1 headaches," dizziness, and cramps by replenishing minerals lost through rapid weight loss.

Late Morning / After a Meal: Ceremonial Grade Matcha (Green Tea): Provides high-flavanol EGCG and L-theanine to protect brain circulation and prevent "jitters".

Evening / After Dinner: High-quality "undutched" Cocoa: 50g of dark chocolate (70–85% cocoa) to boost Nitric Oxide and support vascular health.

Breakfast: High-Protein Fiber Bowl

  • Protein & Fermented Foods: 1 cup of Greek yogurt or Kefir (supports gut microbiome efficiency during slower transit times).

  • Soluble Fiber: Top with 1 tbsp chia seeds or oats to keep digestion moving gently.

  • Trace Minerals: Sprinkle with pumpkin seeds (high in zinc) for hair and nail strength.

Lunch: Lean Protein & Nitric Oxide Boost

  • Lean Protein: Grilled chicken breast or white fish.

  • Nitric Oxide Support: A base of leafy greens and beets to dilate blood vessels and boost brain function.

  • Healthy Fats: Add half an avocado or a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil to aid vitamin absorption (A, D, E, K) without causing nausea.

Afternoon Hydration Break: Digestive Support

  • Hydration: 16oz of water (essential for the metabolic process of lipolysis to break down fat).

  • Ginger or Peppermint Tea: If experiencing nausea or "sulfur burps," use these as natural prokinetics.

Dinner: Detoxification & Satiety

  • Lean Protein: Lean turkey or tofu.

  • Cruciferous Vegetables: Steamed broccoli or cauliflower containing sulforaphane to aid liver detoxification and hormone metabolism.

  • Probiotic Side: A small serving of sauerkraut to maintain bacterial balance in a slower gut.

Dessert: Brain-Fix Treat

  • High-Quality Cocoa: A square of dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) to cap off your Nitric Oxide production for the day.

Water is Non-Negotiable: Because GLP-1s can "dull thirst cues," you must consciously drink water to ensure lipolysis can occur.

Protein First: Always prioritize hitting your protein target to prevent muscle loss and significant hair thinning.

Watch for Overload: Avoid high-fat meals, as they can cause extreme nausea when gastric emptying is slowed by the medication.
